While the tone is fine and there are some cool features, the volume is completely wimpy. I suppose if I was going for a cleaner 50's style PAF tone I'd swap out the BB Pro's but I just can't bring myself to tamper with what works (for me)Just to test my theory that small speakers can’t deliver a solid bass, I spent some time with a Roland MICRO CUBE BASS RX, one of the more expensive practice amps in this price range that has four 4” speakers.

But I usually play medium gain crunch to hard rock and for me, the 02 LP Standard has a punchy growl and complexity to the tone that makes it my fave. I've got a 06 Faded LP Special with Pearly Gates and 50's wiring and a '13 SG Standard with 57 Classics and modern wiring that both clean up beautifully. Even setting the amp clean it delivers flat, uninspiring cleans. Rolled down cleans on the bridge are passable but the neck is real bad. That said, for whatever reason my 02 just doesn't do cleans well at all. For me, the biggest turn off in a LP is a boomy bottom end and plinky top end because it makes it difficult to dial in but this guitar, especially at a gig, has a great string to string balance. Initially when I got it about 6 years ago I struggled with its bright sound, but over time I've come to love how tight and punchy the bottom end is, how articulate and chimey the top end is, and how the slight scoop in the mids can be offset by, yes, setting the mid abit higher on my vintage 2203's. I've also got a 02 LP Standard with BB Pro's that's my fave guitar. I think I've been playing my Tele for too long. maybe this was obvious to a lot of folks out there, but I did find these pickups a pain to EQ in at first but just a tweak of the knobs and now its the LP sound in my head. NOT what I wanted, but once I kept the bass/treble about the same and boosted the mids, the sound just came to life.Īnyway. I was having a blast playing the guitar after that.įor a while, I was rolling the treble back some but that was making the bass come through too much and causing a flubby sound on the low/bass strings and made the neck pickup too muddy. It really helped the feeling and attack of the notes. Recently I tried upping the mids a lot on my amps and the whole guitar just came to life! Tons of warmth and the classic LP 'growl' under gain. These pickups being alnico 5 magnets and low output they're noticeably bright for a Les Paul at least to my ears. I got the pickup heights dialed in well and everything was going good for clean tones, but the overdrive sounds was never quite 'right' to me with these pickups. I've been playing my LP Standard 2002 for a few months now and I was considering ditching these pickups but I didn't want to give up on them.
